Wings of God

eagle On Sunday January 21, the First Baptist Church of Westfield, NJ (the church that sponsors this edevotions web site) installed their new minister, Dr. Dee Dee Turlington. Dr. Phyllis Trible of Union Theological Seminary in New York, preached at the installation service.

Dr. Phyllis Trible presented a shared image of our church's mission: wings of God. With the image comes the knowledge of God as deliverer, leader, victor, healer, provider, and protector.

What more could we possibly need to enable us to leave the security of the nest and try out our own wings? If we run out of energy or hit bumpy weather too challenging for our state of growth, the pinions of the Lord are there beneath us to catch us and lift us up. If something on the flight path threatens us, the wings of God are spread above us to hide and help us. No matter how risky the flight seems, we are safe, as long as we are flying with God. Maybe not so safe, if we remain in the nest beyond the period needed for us to grow strong, though God soars above us and invites us to come and follow.

But those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. (Isaiah 40:31)
