I Will Be With You
One of the most meaningful statements God has revealed is "I will be with you." The risen Jesus says this to his disciples before he ascends to heaven. He gives them a charge: go and make disciples. He gives them a corresponding promise: I am with you. (Matthew 28:18-20) Something similar happens in the Old Testament for Joshua, who succeeded Moses as the leader of Israel. God gives Joshua a charge: go and take the land I have promised to you. He gives Joshua a corresponding promise: "As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will not fail you or forsake you." (Joshua 1:1-5) At times of loss, change, and disorientation, God speaks this gentle word of commitment that makes all the difference. Loved ones die, eras of life pass, and familiar things are lost to us, but the Lord is constant. You are just as precious to our Lord as was Joshua and the Twelve; Christ is with you, too. Take a moment to repeat the Lord's promise to yourself, and to let it sink in: "I will be with you; I will not fail you or forsake you." |
