Hold People in Your Heart
Holding someone in my heart is different from holding someone in my hands. My hands can close around the held person and grasp them and restrain them, even imprison them. But my heart can only open to them, be vulnerable before them, care about them, invite them in. Hearts cannot force or impose, and holding in the heart has nothing to do with control. Hands can hold on to; hearts hold someone up before God. This is as true of our spouses and children and best friends as it is of our church family. As true of our talents and reputation and successes as it is of our relationships. Not ours to control, but ours to delight in, ours to cradle and cherish while given us and to release when it is time to let go. May your hands learn from your heart how to hold all things loosely. |
